Key point

We follow hiking trails with a maximum difficulty of T3 on the SAC scale. The ascent to Cabane de Prafleuri and up to Col des Roux as well as the descent to Lac des Dix are steep in short places, but not exposed.

Detail program

From the meeting point, we take the cable car to climb the 285-metre-high dam wall, which is one of the highest in the world and holds around 400 million cubic meters of water.

Once we have left the dam behind us, our path leads us into an idyllic side valley. Here we climb at a leisurely pace to the Cabane de Prafleuri. Although the hut is no longer manned at this time of year, the spot is perfect for a short break before we tackle the final ascent up to the pass.

A highlight of this tour is the ibex colony at Col des Roux, which can often be seen here in their natural habitat. This colony is known for its impressive size and often offers the opportunity to observe the animals at close range. Perhaps we will be lucky enough to encounter them on this day too.

We then descend to Lac des Dix, whose emerald-green waters form a stark contrast to the otherwise rugged mountain landscape. With views of glaciers and imposing cliffs, we let the altitude drop and hike through several tunnels along the lake back to the cable car. If you wish, you can also descend on foot and, depending on how long it takes to catch the next bus, we can finish off with an aperitif at the Hôtel du Barrage.

Region

We are in the upper part of the Val d'Hérémence in Valais, a landscape full of contradictions. On the one hand, the Lac des Dix and the huge Grande Dixence dam dominate the landscape, while on the other, the natural landscape is rugged and pristine. These contrasts make the region extremely interesting and invite you to go on long hikes in the Valais mountains. Thanks to the access road to the dam and the cable car, Lac des Dix is easy to reach by public transport.
