Crevasses are among the greatest dangers on alpine high altitude tours, especially when they are hidden under a blanket of snow that cannot support the weight of a person. Roping up is therefore often mandatory to avoid accidents. However, one would normally give a wide berth to such a crevasse zone as in our photo – the danger of a crevasse fall would be too high.
